SAHPRA Issues Urgent Warning on Zinc Picolinate and Selenium Products for Children
The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has issued a critical alert regarding the dangers of zinc picolinate and selenium-containing products marketed for children. These products, often promoted as 'immune boosters' for treating common ailments like colds and flu, are now under scrutiny due to potential health risks.
According to SAHPRA's recent evaluations, zinc picolinate and selenium are not permitted in health supplements for individuals under 18 years old. The authority's guidelines highlight the potential health risks associated with these ingredients when consumed by children.
Health experts warn that zinc picolinate can cause adverse effects such as indigestion, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. The unpredictable absorption of zinc from this source further increases the risk of these side effects, making it unsuitable for children's elemental zinc supplementation.
On the other hand, while selenium is essential for children's growth, excessive intake can lead to serious adverse outcomes. This risk is heightened by varying dietary selenium levels among different demographic groups. Although selenium supplementation may be necessary in specific conditions, careless administration in general supplements can result in harmful overdoses.
SAHPRA has taken decisive action, classifying any medicinal product containing zinc picolinate or selenium intended for children as a Category A medicine under the Medicines and Related Substances Act. As a result, these products must be registered with SAHPRA, and any item sold as a Category D (complementary) medicine is deemed illegal.
The authority has mandated that all such products be withdrawn from shelves within six months. Health professionals are urged to stop distributing, selling, or dispensing these items to ensure the safety of children across South Africa. Parents and guardians are encouraged to return any affected products to their local pharmacies or distributors.
Public and healthcare professionals are reminded to report any adverse effects experienced following the use of these health products via the Med Safety App, contributing vital information to support ongoing safety monitoring.
