After years of witnessing Tadej Pogačar's dominance, the organizers have decided to shake things up. The iconic Italian race, known for its challenging white roads of Tuscany, has seen a significant increase in difficulty since 2024. However, after two years of Pogačar's impressive solo attacks, the race organizers, RCS, have decided to make some adjustments.
In the 2026 edition, the route will be shortened by a considerable 14 kilometers, bringing the total distance to a more manageable 201 kilometers. Additionally, riders will encounter two fewer gravel sectors, which could significantly impact the race dynamics.
The gravel sectors will still play a crucial role, with the first sector, Vidritta, kicking things off early after just 10 kilometers of racing. This is followed closely by Bagnaia and Radi, but then there's a notable 30-kilometer gap before the next off-road adventure at Lucignano d'Asso, the longest and most challenging gravel sector.
The race will feature a mix of four-star and five-star sectors, with the iconic Monte Sante Marie slopes, known for their crucial role in past editions, remaining a key moment in the race. With just over 70 kilometers left after this sector, missing the move here could mean saying goodbye to any hopes of victory.
Despite the changes, Pogačar remains the favorite to make it three wins in a row at Strade Bianche. His impressive performance on the shorter course in 2022 has him poised for another dominant showing. However, he'll face tough competition, including former winner Wout van Aert, who proved to be the only rider capable of dropping Pogačar last season.
Other top contenders to watch out for on the softened route include Tom Pidcock, Ben Healy, and Matteo Jorgenson. With Pogačar's star teammate, Isaac del Toro, and last year's third-place finisher, Tim Wellens, by his side, UAE Team Emirates remains the team to beat.
