Trey Burke's Iconic No. 3 Jersey Retirement at Michigan: A Tribute to a Basketball Legend (2026)

From the Final Four to the NBA: Michigan Basketball Honors Trey Burke with No. 3 Jersey Raised to Rafters

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN -- The University of Michigan will pay tribute to former star player Trey Burke by raising his No. 3 jersey to the rafters at the Crisler Center. This ceremony will take place at halftime of the Wolverines' highly anticipated home game against Ohio State on January 23rd, 2024.

Burke, a Columbus, Ohio native, had a remarkable two-year stint at Michigan from 2011 to 2013. During this time, he became the first Wolverine to be recognized as the consensus National Player of the Year and a consensus first-team All-American. His impact on the team was immense, as he led Michigan to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2013 national championship game.

In his freshman year, Burke averaged 14.8 points and set a new Michigan freshman assist record. The following season was even more historic, as he averaged 18.6 points and 6.7 assists, breaking the single-season assist record with 260 assists. This helped Michigan reach its first Final Four in two decades.

Burke's achievements didn't stop there. He swept the nation's top individual awards, including the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Bob Cousy Award, and AP, NABC, and USBWA National Player of the Year honors. These accolades solidified his status as one of the best players in college basketball.

After the 2013 NBA Draft, Burke began his professional career, playing 10 seasons in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers. As a rookie, he averaged 12.8 points and 5.7 assists, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team recognition.

Throughout his NBA career, Burke appeared in over 500 games, averaging 10.6 points and 3.3 assists. Known for his explosive scoring, he had 28 career 20-point games and scored a career-high 40 points against the Houston Rockets in 2018.

Burke's international career also flourished, as he represented the United States and continued playing professionally overseas. He signed with Italy's Pallacanestro Reggiana in 2023 and later moved to Turkey's Bursaspor in 2024.

To commemorate this special occasion, the first 5,000 fans attending the game will receive a replica No. 3 jersey banner. This event promises to be a memorable celebration of Trey Burke's exceptional career and his impact on Michigan basketball.
